I agree with Tim Keller, “I read because I’m desperate.”
While reading by itself will not make one a better leader or follower, reading well will improve both. Yet, even then, one must take the knowledge and allow it to change his/her life.
Read purposefully.
I think this author is doing a great job of putting into words how to just...be a good employee. He is teaching how to be happy, how to have a sense of satisfaction at work. I love Gandhi's quote "Be the change you wish to see in the world." The author continued, "To truly lead, and make a difference in the world, you must always start with yourself."
A very true comment, to many people spend time trying to change everyone else. It's probably why Danny has spent all that time and money trying to teach us to "Look in the Mirror."
This chapter is just too full of "nuggets." Awesome stuff. After all the books on this subject I've read, and studied, I did not think it would impact me that much. Wrong.
I pray that others at Alethes would step up to the plate and become leaders.
Page 24: " Can you recall an outcome that might have turned out differentley if you had taken the lead? Waht about that idea you've been carrying around in your head that will improve your product or service? These are your opportunities to increase ROI: relationships, outcomes, and improvements."
Page 28: "I've rarely met a person who didn't want to make more money, be a better spouse or parent, become a better employer, take a more active role in their.....But I've also rarely met anyone, including myself, who has accomplished this to the degree she or he is capable."
I spent time with this book again this weekend, to look more at myself and not so much those around me, and the part where Mr. Sanborn speaks of Obligation v/ Opportunity was an awesome perspective.
This is the goal I have set for myself to focus on this month. I'm looking at all things I do as opportunities and not obligations.
I do know that I've done pretty well at this, thru time, but want to be completely humble in my services to my team and my company.

Mr. Sanborn makes an important point here..."leadership is intimately linked to service, and not customer service per se."
